CT Remembers 10-Year Anniversary of Kleen Energy Explosion

On Sunday, the Connecticut AFL-CIO Health & Safety Committee will hold a memorial service to remember and honor the six workers who died in the Kleen Energy explosion ten years ago. The remembrance will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the memorial just outside the Kleen Energy plant in Middletown.

On February 7, 2010, the Kleen Energy power plant exploded in Middletown at 11:17 a.m. The initial blast killed five workers and injured dozens more. One additional worker later died from his injuries. Some of the families of the deceased workers will attend the ceremony.

Speakers will include Rep. Joe Courtney, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim, Connecticut Building Trades President Dave Roche, IUOE Local 478 Health & Safety Director Kyle Zimmer, and Connecticut AFL-CIO Health & Safety Committee member Ron McLellan. Retired Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 777 member Paul Venti will serve as master of ceremonies.

Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 21 (New York) will have bag pipers and drummers play at the ceremony. The Middletown Fire Department / IAFF Local 1073 will serve as the color guard.
