The CT Department of Labor Business Engagement Unit is hosting a seminar on Drug Testing in the CT Workplace on Thursday, July 20, following the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state.

Since the legalization of recreational cannabis in the State of Connecticut in 2021, workers and employers have been faced with a new set of challenges. Stephen Lattanzio, Attorney, Legal Division, and Susanne Tufano, Field Supervisor, Division of Wage & Workplace Standards, will provide a wealth of information to help workers and employers better understand drug testing laws and navigate the impact legalized marijuana has had on the CT workplace.

This free virtual session is geared toward human resource professionals, business owners and managers, attorneys, and others who are interested in learning about their rights and responsibilities as they pertain to drug testing in the workplace.

Topics will include:

  • Do I have to drug test my employees?
  • What is pre-employment drug testing?
  • What is random drug testing?
  • What is reasonable suspicion drug testing?
  • What is a high-risk, safety-sensitive occupation?
  • Can an employee who fails a drug test qualify for unemployment benefits?
  • Does federal law treat marijuana (medical or cannabis) differently than CT law?
  • What is the difference between testing for alcohol impairment versus impairment by drugs?
  • Is the testing and treatment of medical marijuana exactly the same as recreational marijuana (cannabis)?

About the Speakers

Stephen C. Lattanzio is a semi-retired Principal Attorney in the CT Labor Department's Legal Division. He has worked for the past thirty-five (35) years for the Labor Department and is the principal legal advisor to the Director of the Wage and Workplace Standards Division. He received his B.A from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, and his law degree from the Franklin Pierce Law Institute (now University of New Hampshire School of Law) in Concord, NH. Mr. Lattanzio is admitted to practice before the CT State courts and the US District Court for the District of CT.

Susanne Tufano is currently a Field Supervisor with the CT Department of Labor. She started her career with the CT Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services as a Special Investigator in 1999 before joining the CT Department of Labor Wage and Workplace Standards Division in 2003. Susanne received her B.S in Criminal Justice from the University of New Haven, an M.S in Management from Albertus Magnus College, and finally a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology from Walden University.
