Strike Called Off: Union & Employer Reach Historic Agreement for Norwalk Hospital Food Service Workers
NORWALK, CT — CHCA District 1199, NUHHCE is pleased to announce that the planned strike by Norwalk Hospital food service workers has been called off following the successful negotiation of a groundbreaking agreement with Morrison Healthcare. This contract secures unprecedented gains for these chronically underpaid workers and represents a major victory in their fight for economic fairness and workplace dignity. The newly ratified contract includes an average pay increase of 22% across the board, with the 15 most egregiously underpaid workers receiving immediate increases between 40% and 70%. These significant pay adjustments address years of stagnation and inequity for workers whose wages barely hovered above the state minimum. “This agreement is nothing short of historic,” said Dave Hannon, President of CHCA District 1199, NUHHCE. “These workers stood together in solidarity and refused to accept the disrespect and broken promises that have defined their experience. Today, they have secured a brighter future for themselves and their families.” Key provisions of the agreement include:
- Healthcare Savings: Significant reductions in health benefit costs.
- Retirement Support: A new employer match for retirement contributions.
- Overtime Protections: Ensuring overtime pay after 8 hours of work in a single day.
- Paid Time-Off: Increased vacation time and holidays.
- Workplace Improvements: Additional benefits aimed at promoting fairness and stability in the workplace.
- Discipline Reform: Establishing just cause as the standard for disciplinary actions.
While the agreement addresses key worker demands, the underlying unfair labor practice charge against Morrison Healthcare remains unresolved. Nevertheless, this contract marks a turning point for the food service workers at Norwalk Hospital, who voted to unionize in August 2023 and have fought tirelessly for a fair first contract. “These workers have inspired their community and shown what is possible when people stand together against injustice,” added Hannon. “We thank our elected leaders, community members, and all those who supported these workers during this fight.” CHCA District 1199, NUHHCE remains committed to protecting and promoting the rights of all healthcare workers and is proud to stand with the Norwalk Hospital food service workers in their ongoing journey toward workplace justice.
