On Saturday, April 28, at 12:00 p.m., local workers, advocates, elected officials, and students will gather at the Workers Memorial in Bushnell Park for a ceremony to honor workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries on the job.

According to the Workers Compensation Commission’s annual report, 55 workers lost their lives to work-related injuries in fiscal year 2016-2017.

This year is also particularly daunting as the Trump administration attempts to rollback, repeal, delay, or weaken protections that are critical to working people. For instance, this administration has repealed the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rule to hold federal contractors accountable for obeying safety and labor laws, cut the DOL budget by 21% in their recent budget proposal, and delayed the enforcement of OSHA’s silica standard in construction.

The speakers will commemorate those who lost their lives on the job and renew the fight for stronger protections for workers across the country. Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman will receive the Connecticut AFL-CIO Health & Safety Award.
