Connecticut AFL-CIO to Hold Twelfth Biennial Political Convention in Hartford
The Connecticut AFL-CIO, the umbrella federation of Connecticut unions, will hold the first day of its twelfth biennial political convention at the Hartford Hilton on Friday, April 6.
Unlike most years, this convention is split into three non-consecutive days – one on April 6, the next on June 22, and a final half day on August 31. The split convention dates are a creative approach to addressing a unique challenge in the upcoming election cycle designed to provide organized labor with the greatest flexibility to reach a decision that we all feel is in the best interests of working people.
The delegates to the April convention could potentially vote on endorsements for Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the State, Comptroller, U.S. House races, and select state legislative races. If any endorsements are done in April, the state federation will put together a vigorous program to turnout labor’s vote in the August primary (if needed). This consists of door-to-door canvassing, phone banks, mailings, and engaging members in the workplace.
At the convention, delegates will also vote on numerous resolutions that will direct the political and legislative focus of the organization over the next two years.
Highlights of the agenda include (times are approximate):
10:00 AM Convention opens
10:30 AM Gubernatorial candidate interviews
1:00 PM Comptroller candidate interview
1:30 PM Attorney General candidate interviews
3:00 PM Potential vote on endorsements
The press is invited to attend. Please pre-register if you plan to attend and stop by the registration desk for a press pass.
